History of Absolut Vodka

Our vodka was introduced in the US in 1979. Before that ABSOLUT was in production for a hundred years. Meet the self-made man who started it, Lars Olsson Smith. Absolut is a vodka created in tiny Åhus Sweden over a century ago is now one of the world's top spirit brands.

On July 24, 2008 following the successful completion of the acquisition of V&S, Pernod Ricard is pleased to confirm the new organisation.In keeping with its decentralised structure, Pernod Ricard is putting in place two Swedish-based business units.
- ‘The Absolut Company’ has the worldwide responsibility of ABSOLUT and Level including notably production. It becomes part of the Pernod Ricard brand-owner network, alongside the other key brand owners of the Group managing the outstanding international Premium spirits brands such as Chivas, Martell, Jameson, Malibu, Kahlúa, Havana Club, and the champagne and wine brands Mumm, Perrier-Jouët, Jacob's Creek and Montana. Ketil Eriksen has been appointed CEO of ‘The Absolut Company’.

ABSOLUT VODKA is one of the world’s best selling premium spirits brands and achieved sales of 10.7 million nine-liter cases in 2007 (96.6 millions of liters). Some 500,000 bottles of ABSOLUT VODKA are produced every day. Every bottle of ABSOLUT VODKA is produced in Åhus, in southern Sweden.
Level is created by the craftsmen of ABSOLUT in Åhus, Sweden, Level is the result of over 500 years of vodka expertise and tradition. It is created using both continuous and batch distillation for a unique taste and character.


- ‘Pernod Ricard Nordic’ will market Pernod Ricard’s international and local brands in the Nordic countries. The company has been created by merging V&S Wine and V&S Distillers and Pernod Ricard Nordic Countries (the current Pernod Ricard distribution subsidiary in the Nordic region).

• ABSOLUT VODKA is produced from winter wheat, a hardy wheat grain that gives ABSOLUT VODKA its smooth grain character. Every year approximately 80,000 tons are used to produce ABSOLUT VODKA. Over one kilo (two pounds) of grain is used for every one-liter bottle.
• ABSOLUT VODKA uses a unique process called continuous distillation, introduced in the nineteenth century by “The Vodka King”, Lars Olsson Smith. ABSOLUT VODKA is distilled hundreds of times until all impurities have been removed.
• The award-winning advertising and marketing campaign of ABSOLUT VODKA continues to break new ground in communicating the brand’s core values of clarity, simplicity and perfection.
